Home News Health News Experts’ fears as rate of infection among over-50s in Scotland doubles in a decade Jul 22 2010 HIV infection among the over-50s has more than doubled in Scotland over a 10-year period.Between 2000 and 2009, there was a 110 per cent rise in new HIV cases in the over 50s.The figures from the Health Protection Authority Scotland exclude immigrants.In under-50s, the rise in new cases was 70 per cent.The number of people living with HIV in Scotland has jumped significantly and there are an estimated 4500 to 5500 cases, including undiagnosed infection.From the late 1980 to the 1990s, Scotland averaged 160 new reports every year.In recent years that has leapt to more than 400 a year, including immigrants.HPA Scotland’s Glenn Codere said increased testing was one reason for the rise. He said: “Overall, we have seen a hefty increase in the number of cases reported.”Sixty per cent of the over-50s infected in Scotland were gay men. But of the over-50s infected abroad, 83 per cent were straight.There are still only about 20 new cases from over-50s in Scotland annually.Glenn said: “Regardless of the age of the person, they need to be aware that the pool of HIV infected people in Scotland is higher than it’s ever been and it is increasing, so people should be tested and should wear condoms.”Early diagnosis means the treatments available are much more effective.”New research from the HPA covering the rest of the UK found there has also been an explosion in other sexually transmitted diseases in the same age group.Marriage breakdown and ignorance about safe sex are among the many contributing to the increase.Ruth Smith, who led the Health Protection Agency research team, said: “We must continually reinforce the safe sex message.”Using a condom with all new or casual partners is the surest way to ensure people do not get infected with a serious sexually transmitted infection such as HIV.”Some people were also putting off being tested until late in life and may have had the virus for a number of years.
