Libido is defined as the sex drive in a human being. It is a natural instinct that arises from a combination of the psychotic and emotional energies. Being a natural instinct, all people are expected to follow the law of nature and have desire for sex. It is nature’s way of ensuring that there is propagation of the next generation.

Lack of libido in a woman can lead to less productivity in many areas of their lives. This includes lack of self esteem and self confidence. Such a woman would perform poorly as a manager in a firm. It can also lead to breakage of marriages as couples engage in blame game.

There are as many as 40% of women who suffer from a condition that is medically referred to as female sexual dysfunction. Such women would either not have desire for sex, or when they get involved in sexual intercourse, then they are unable to reach orgasm. These women can therefore be described as lacking in libido.

There are number of non-medical causes of lack of sexual desire in women. These include pain during sexual intercourse, lax of the muscles around the vaginal opening, use of antidepressant drugs and hormonal imbalance.

The medical caused of loss of libido include presence of bacterial infection or fungal infection, thinning of the tissues or reduced elasticity of muscles around the genitals, and ulcers in the vaginal opening.

The first step towards having a clinical solution to sexual dysfunction is the willingness to speak about the problem to a doctor. Yet this remains the most difficult step for most women. Most of them consider this a personal problem that cannot be shared either out of ignorance that it is indeed a medical problem or the fear of making their sex partners appear inadequate. In fact, every woman should make consultation on sexual health a component of every regular medical checkup.

What would the doctor be looking for in such consultation? Definitely is nothing out of the medical practice. The key step is to conduct and examination for the pelvis. In this case, the doctor would be trying to identify the physical causes of loss of desire for sex. It needs to be explained that ability to enjoy sex is a function of reflex. Therefore, the last sex episode would greatly determine the ability or inability of a woman to enjoy sex. The thinning of genital muscles and pain during intercourse as mention above may reduce chances of enjoying sex for the woman. The doctor would attempt to reverse these through surgery.
