It’s probably the worst news you will ever receive in your adult life – ‘Sorry, man but your wife is cheating on you.’ Betrayal is a highly destructive force because it not only destroys your respect for the person who violated your trust, it also erodes your self-esteem. And now your wife has cheated on you. What now? What should you do? Here, we present the ways you can effectively handle a cheating wife and still keep your dignity intact:
Consider her innocent until proven guilty.
If you suspect your wife is cheating on you, find out if this is really true. Remember that relationships are dynamic and tend to change over time. Even you have probably changed. Your wife may also be undergoing some personal changes of her own which may or may not constitute cheating.
Do not try to categorize her.
If you wife is cheating on you, avoid labeling her with an adjective preceded by an expletive… although that can’t be helped. You’ve been hurt terribly and in situations such as this, it will be very difficult to think straight.
However, you will be adding fuel to the fire if you begin calling her names. Remember that the situation is already highly volatile and if you’re not careful, it can escalate to something that you or she may not be able to handle effectively.
Discuss the subject as adults.
If you’re still unsure about the matter, ask her gently regarding her recent behavior. Let her know that you are aware of the changes and that you want to know what’s going on. Mention the situations where you felt that she has kept something from you or that she seemed too distant.
As much as possible, do not start a yelling match. First of all, it will be difficult to hear what each of you is really saying above the din of bottled up emotions and you might say things that you will regret later on.
Encourage her to be honest. If she answers your questions, listen. You might finally understand why this is happening in your marriage. Be honest with her, too and tell her how hurt you are. If you must take a break from each other, then go ahead and try to cool things down before you make your decisions.
Do you confront her?
What if you caught your wife cheating, what do you do? That really depends on the situation. If you catch her in the act, would you risk physically hurting her, the man (or woman) she is with or doing something that will land you in jail? If you have children, that would even complicate the situation. In your anger and confusion, you might do something that will embarrass and haunt you for the rest of your life and it will probably be not worth it.
A better idea would be to talk to her and tell her what you know. If you must ask her why, then go ahead but be prepared for her answers. There’s a good chance you will not like what you’ll hear.
The aftermath
Probably the most important concern you will have once you’ve proven that your wife is cheating on you would be the status of your marriage. Will you be able to forgive her for what she did? Is leaving the marriage the solution to your problems? If you choose to take her back, would you be willing to accept the consequences? Could you honestly say that you will be able to handle your marriage from there? More importantly, will she be able to remain loyal to you?
If you have a cheating wife, carefully weigh all the options that you have. Consider your future and the lives of your children as well. Best of all, take care of yourself. After all, this is just an unfortunate event in your life and shouldn’t be the end of it.
